What do I need to know about my students as readers and writers?

Grade Level Expectations will assist content area teachers with aligning texts appropriate for a student's age.  Understanding the lexile levels will also assist with recognizing when a student may have difficulty with a text and additional support is necessary.  Use of the supportive to intensive strategies will offer recommended tools and resources to adjust instruction for all learners.

Understanding the structure of the text presented to a student, the way the text is organized, will assist students with understanding the author's purpose for writing and determine if that purpose matches the purpose for reading.  Content area teachers should be familiar with the types of text structures!

Consistency in assessing students' writing is imperative in overall improvement in communicating effectively for a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes.  It is recommended that the PARCC Writing Rubrics be used school-wide.
